The greatest unsolved mystery in video games

Eye Sigil

The biggest mystery in video games has still not been solved, and it involves over 19 games and years of code-breaking.

In order to understand the scale of this secret, it is important to start at the beginning.

Crypt of the NecroDancer

In May 2015, a Reddit user named RireMakar was looking through the files of an indie game titled Crypt of the NecroDancer when he stumbled upon a conspicuous image, named “eye.jpg”.

The player immediately posted his discovery to the game’s subreddit, where another user quickly decoded the file and unearthed an even more mysterious GIF file, which seemed to be a piece of a much larger glyph.

Although it did not contain any more information, it became clear that the buried GIF was a puzzle piece and that there were more to be found.

The Great Conspiracy

Eventually, gamers realised that Crypt of the NecroDancer was not the only game to feature the Eye Sigil, and a number of other games on Steam also included the secret image.

It became clear that the appearance of these strange images was the beginning of an Alternate Reality Game, similar to Halo 2’s “I Love Bees” or Blizzard’s ongoing Sombra reveal.

These games take place in the real world and are often used to reveal upcoming releases or for promotional purposes.

Game Detectives, an ARG-solving Reddit group, began to find the Eye Sigil hidden in a number of other games, with each symbol hiding another glyph.

To date, the community has found hidden puzzle pieces in 19 games and continues to search for more clues in order to create a complete sigil from the pieces hidden in each game.

The current state of the puzzle

The unknown creator of this mystery has made a concerted effort to conceal buried images and glyphs across a wide number of games, with game developers stating that they are unable to comment on the presence of the images.

The Eye Sigil is one of the largest and most complex alternate reality games ever discovered, and speculation as to what the puzzle will reveal has captivated the Game Detectives community.
