Your graphics card’s power cables are about to become obsolete

New PCIe standards are on the verge of making your graphic’s cards auxiliary power cables obsolete.

This news comes via an interview with Tom’s Hardware, in which PCI-SIG Vice President Richard Solomon said that new PCIe 4.0 motherboard connectors would deliver a minimum of 300 watts and perhaps as much as 500 watts.

That means you could power today’s most demanding graphics cards without the need for dedicated power cables.

Currently, PCIe 3.0 is currently certified for up to 75 watts of power delivery, so this proposed jump is quite substantial.

PCIe 4.0 will be backward compatible with PCIe 3.0 cards, although newer PCIe 4.0-compliant cards can’t be used on older PCIe 3.0 boards.
