Eve Online goes free to play after 13 years

Eve Online

The Eve Online development team is making some drastic changes to the game recently, namely the addition of “Clone States“, which allows players to experience the central features of the game for free.

This new payment model is similar to Runescape’s optional membership system, allowing gamers to play for an unlimited amount of time but permanently restricting their access to content unless they pay a monthly subscription.

Below is a summary of the two Clone States:

  • The Alpha Clone State is the new base state for all clones and it will be available to any character in New Eden at any time. Clones in the Alpha state will be able to train and use a specific set of skills including tech one Frigates, Destroyers and Cruisers for your faction along with essential weapons and modules. Alphas will also train skills at a reduced rate compared to Omegas.
  • The Omega Clone State is obtained by augmenting basic clones using neural expanders and cerebral acceleration technology, granting unlimited skill access. Omega clone state will behave exactly as your subscribed characters do now.

Your clone state will be determined by your account status.

Characters on subscribed or PLEXed accounts will be granted Omega state, while Alpha state will be given to characters on any unsubscribed account.

While this new approach may cause some stirs among current Eve Online players, it can only be a good thing for prospective new players, allowing gamers who would otherwise have been too intimidated by the subscription model to try the game.

As an eve online player the option they are bringing in really is a non-expiring trial, the most accurate comparison would be World of Warcraft’s Starter Edition. This is fine to try the game out, see if you like it and learn how it works but its not a viable alternative way to play for existing players.
