A little while ago, Hi Rez Studios launched the Open Beta for its team-based hero shooter Paladins of the Realm.

The trailer for the game caused quite a stir online, with many gamers drawing clear comparisons to Blizzard’s Overwatch.

While we have seen blatant Overwatch clones appear in the mobile space, these games have not yet appeared on major platforms such as PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.

Todd Harris from Hi-Rez Studios has remained adamant that Paladins is not an Overwatch clone, and says the game’s features were implemented long before the release of Overwatch.

“While Overwatch is a fine game, we want people to understand that game development is an iterative process with many ideas coming from past projects,” said Harris.

“This is true for Hi-Rez and almost every other game studio. For a hero shooter, the game that deserves the most credit for the genre is TF2.”

The similarities between the two games caught public attention after the following video went viral on YouTube:
