Sometimes all we want to do is kick back, relax and lose an entire weekend to a video game.
While most games can be incredible time-sinks depending on how long you wish to spend with them, not all of them continue to offer up new content and surprise us hundreds of hours in.
As a result, this list focusses mainly on singleplayer titles.
Check out 8 games we’ve played for a thousand hours:
Skyrim (and other Bethesda titles)
Of course Bethesda’s games are an easy choice.
While The Elder Scrolls and Fallout games easily had hundreds of hours of written content it’s often the incredible world’s they build that take up most our attention.
Combine that with incredible mod support (now also available on consoles) and you can easily lose a thousand hours or more to one of Bethesda’s classics.
Diablo series
Some people just love to grind, and there’s no better grind than that offered by the Diablo games.
Whether its searching to get that perfectly rolled ancient armour set or just falling into the familiar rhythms of continuously clicking, there always feels like a reason to come back to Diablo.
With regular seasons on PC and a staggering amount of varied loot available, you can easily spend a thousand hours in the realms of darkness.
Terraria/Starbound
This is kind of cheating, because those of you who have played both Starbound and Terraria know that the two aren’t all that alike.
The incredible crafting mechanics and adventures they provide are similar however, and whether you choose to fight mythical creatures on the ground or in the stars, chances are you will spend a fair amount of time doing it.
Civilization
“Just one more turn”.
A phrase often uttered by Civilization players just as the first rays of dawn begin creeping through the curtains.
The beautiful simplicity of Civilization’s turn-based mechanics combined with a different experience every time you play means you could easily lose a thousand hours to any of the games in the series.
Garry’s Mod
A game that’s quite literally about modding, Garry’s Mod is perhaps the only game on this list in which your mileage will truly vary.
It’s the gaming equivalent of a sandbox and depending on how far you are willing to let your imagination loose, you could experience the equivalent of beautifully-realised sandcastles or hilarious disasters.
