Head of Xbox Phil Spencer has confirmed that Microsoft’s Play Anywhere program is open to third-party publishers.
While the program currently only features Microsoft exclusives, in an interview with PC Authority Spencer said that Xbox was open to the idea of third-party games on the platform.
The biggest hurdle is convincing third-party publishers that they aren’t giving away an extra copy of their game for free.
“I’d say some of the bigger traditional third party publishers, they want to see how this works out for us,” Spencer said.
“There’s always a fear that you’re ‘giving away two games for the price of one’. I’ll say I think there are very few people that actually buy a game twice, once on PC, once on console.”
While one of the biggest incentives of the Play Anywhere program is the chance for PC gamers to play Xbox one games, getting an additional copy of your game for another platform could be a serious value proposition.
