CD Projekt RED’s upcoming open-world game Cyberpunk 2077 is more ambitious than the critically-acclaimed The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, if a recently-revealed grant request is anything to go by.
According to a report by Polish website PC World, the developer has filed a grant request which outlines some of the central concepts behind the development of Cyberpunk 2077.
CD Projekt RED’s grant concerns key areas of game design, along with the design of specially-created tools, as the developer claims the technology necessary to develop these key areas does not exist yet.
We have translated the grant to English using Google translate, so excuse any grammatical errors.
Below is the full list of development concepts as outlined by the grant request and translated from Polish:
- “City Creation – comprehensive technology for the creation of” live “, playable in real time, the city’s large-scale, which is based on the principles of artificial intelligence and automation, and takes into account the development of innovative processes and tools to support the creation of high-quality games with open world.”
- “Animation Excellence – comprehensive technology enables a significant increase in the quality and productivity of complex animations face and body for games RPG with open world, also taking into account the innovative process solutions and a unique set of dedicated tools.”
- “Cinematic Feel – comprehensive technology for providing a unique, film-quality RPG with open world, also taking into account the innovative process solutions and a unique set of dedicated tools.”
- “The generic support cross-platform multiplayer video games for popular consoles and operating systems.”
Judging by the above information, Cyberpunk 2077 will have a larger world than The Witcher 3, complete with a live city and constructed using specialised development tools.
It is interesting to note the inclusion of cross-platform multiplayer as a key developmental concept. While this could refer to platforms such as Microsoft’s Play Anywhere, it may also refer to true cross-platform multiplayer capability.
Cyberpunk 2077 looks to be the next big hit from CD Projekt RED, and it may just blow The Witcher 3 out of the water.
