The sequel 2007’s iconic PC title Crysis is well and truly here, and has already made quite an impression on the local online PC community, with more local servers than you can shake a nano suit at. In fact, as has become standard of late with big release titles, there are so many local servers that the vast majority of them are empty 90 percent of the time.
I got stuck into the game’s multiplayer component over the weekend, and aside from a shaky lobby interface, I have been nothing but impressed with Crytek’s latest effort. The maps are well designed, gameplay fast and fluid, and the nano suit adds an entire new dynamic to the experience.
If you are planning on grabbing the game but concerned about how much bandwidth playing online will consume, or you already own the game and are curious as to how much data you are spending on the Crysis 2 servers, then read on.
In order to test just how much bandwidth Crysis 2 uses online, we shut down all non-essential Windows applications and ensured that no system updates or the like were able to run during the testing period. We played on a variety of local servers, with the majority of them being capped at 16 players for the testing period. Using Bandwidth Monitor, we tested the game in 30 minute intervals.
Results
| Download (MB) | Upload (MB) | |
| Test period 1 | 8.67 | 6.3 |
| Test period 2 | 7.64 | 5.9 |
| Test period 3 | 8.42 | 6.1 |
| Test period 4 | 8.95 | 6.3 |
| Test period 5 | 7.84 | 6.4 |
| Test period 6 | 7.32 | 6.0 |
| Average | 8.14 | 6.1 |
So on average, we found that Crysis 2 sucks up about 14MB for every 30 minutes of gameplay, or 28MB per hour. If you play for an hour a day, then you can expect to use around 196MB per week, or 784MB per month, which is totally reasonable for a current generation online shooter.
