As we enter 2017, we cannot but help imagine all the awesome games we will be playing this year. Horizon Zero Dawn, Mass Effect Andromeda, Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon: Wildlands, and more.
The sad truth of the matter is although we are excited to play a huge list of games, there are those that will not make it to our platform of choice this year.
Here are the games you will not play in 2017, for obvious development reasons.
God of War
Although we bid farewell to Kratos last year with the God of War III: Remastered edition on PS4, he made a triumphant return at E3 2016 with a brand new setting. Taking place in a Norse mythological setting, Kratos, or whatever his Norse name is, will be returning in a brand new way.
Although the latest God of War looks like a killer new direction for the series, we are sure it is going to take a few years to make sure he is perfect in every way.
With Sony’s first party lineup looking pretty solid for 2017, and no release window in sight for God of War, we cannot help but believe that it is not something we will play in 2017.
Final Fantasy VII: Remake
Final Fantasy XV just released, and while most of us are busy playing it at the moment, the team behind the game are working hard on other things like Kingdom Hearts 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue, and the DLC for Final Fantasy XV.
Although is has been a year and a half since Square Enix announced the Final Fantasy VII: Remake, we have not seen or heard the slightest information regarding the game in some time now.
We know it is going to be chapter based, but when will first chapter release? We have no idea.
With the Kingdom Hearts 15th Anniversary taking place in 2017, Square Enix might be very busy with that series to even have time to work on the remake of the century.
This is probably a no-brainer, as the team behind the Witcher 3: Wild Hunt will take their sweet time with their latest game. We really don’t have a problem with this though, as we know the game will be beyond spectacular.
Cyberpunk 2077 has been around for a few years now, but CD Projekt RED have only really started working on it in the past two years after development wrapped up for The Witcher 3: Blood and Wine.
At the rate we are going, I doubt we will even see the game release on the current generation of hardware, again, I don’t mind at all.
Kingdom Hearts III
The sad truth about Kingdom Hearts III is that it might face the same development hell as Final Fantasy XV. Square Enix originally announced that the game was in development back in 2013.
A year later and we learnt that the developers decided to change the engine from the Crystal Tools, to the Unreal Engine 4. That decision could not have been easy, and it was surely taxing on time and resources.
As the years have gone by, we have seen quick gameplay snippets from the upcoming game, but nothing concrete in terms of story and overall layout of the game’s mechanics.
If anything, Kingdom Hearts III seems to be very early in development still, and although the series is celebrating its 15th anniversary this year, Kingdom Hearts III will not be part of that celebration.
The Last of Us Part II
Not that playing The Last of Us Part II in 2017 was a bad thing, but the game needs time to perfect. We only just recently learnt about the latest title from Naughty Dog back in December last year, and expecting it to be on our PS4s the next year would be asking way too much from them.
We all know that Naughty Dog are one of the best studios in the world, and we know they will get the game to us as soon as they can.
Whatever is happening in Kojima’s latest game, I am sure it is going to be awesome. So far the trailers have been rather freaky-looking, and made very little sense, but Death Stranding will be the Kojima game we need in our lives.
So far we can only hope that we play it in 2017, but the sense of mystery surrounding the game and how little we have seen from it kind of makes us feel that it might not see a 2017 release.
Dead Island 2
Oh Dead Island 2, I don’t know what to say about it other than how disappointed I am that the game is still stuck somewhere in development hell. Announced in October 2014, the game was slated for a early 2015 release, which it obviously missed.
Fast forward a few years into the future, and it is now 2017. No gameplay, no trailers, no social media confirmation that the game is even in development anymore. Dead Island 2 is dead in the water right now, and I doubt we will see the game alive in 2017 at all.
