Microsoft recently unveiled its Windows 10 S operating system, along with its new Surface Laptop.
Windows 10 S is a lightweight, secure operating system which is more integrated with the Windows Store than the “standard” Windows 10.
Users will only be able to install and run apps from the Windows Store when using Windows 10 S, and attempting to run third-party applications will result in the user being prompted to update their OS to Windows 10 Pro.
Windows 10 S features a simplified, cleaner home screen and aims to provide a secure platform for students without limiting functionality.
Microsoft has not yet released the hardware requirements for the new operating system, but said it will run on all devices which support Windows 10.
During the Windows 10 S launch event, Microsoft showcased the operating system’s superior boot times and increased performance, stating that Windows 10 S can run on less-powerful hardware than standard Windows 10.
This has the added advantage of increasing battery life, while maintaining useful features core to the Windows 10 experience – such as Cortana and Windows Hello.
Features and Education
Microsoft has locked the default browser to Microsoft Edge for Windows 10 S, citing its increased security over Google Chrome and Firefox.
“You are able to download another browser that might be available from the Windows Store, but Microsoft Edge will remain the default if, for example, you open an .htm file,” said Microsoft.
“Additionally, the default search provider in Microsoft Edge and Internet Explorer cannot be changed.”
The operating system has been designed for use in educational environments and includes many features suited to students – such as the free inclusion of a one-year Microsoft Office 365 subscription and Intune for Education.
Windows 10 Pro users will be able to “upgrade” their device to Windows 10 S free of charge, and the new operating system includes a free one-year subscription to Minecraft Education Edition.
The operating system’s education administration suite also includes a built-in wizard for setting up multiple Windows 10 desktops for classroom use.
Windows Defender and all ongoing security features of Windows 10 are included in Windows 10 S.
The operating system is also integrated with OneDrive, allowing users to use a Windows 10 S-powered device as a Chromebook alternative.
Microsoft’s Surface Laptop is the first device to ship with Windows 10 S.
