EA announces "Origin" – like Steam but only for EA games

3 June 2011

Electronic Arts has revealed that it is rebranding its PC games digital distribution platform with the launch of a new application called Origin, which will supposedly offer gamers exclusive game content for titles such as Battlefield 3,  Mass Effect 3, FIFA 12, SSX, Madden NFL 12, Need for Speed The Run and Star Wars: The Old Republic.

Origin will also give players exclusive demos, trailers and online betas for EA games.

The brand new service launches at 5PM today, and anyone will be able to download the beta client from the official Origin website.

What is clear is that Origin will be a great platform for EA games. However, if EA wants to take on the monster that is Steam, they will have to provide a similar offering for games from other publishers – something which they are not looking to do at this point.

Like Steam, Origin will let players manage their personal community of gamers, connect to friends, and all that other good stuff.
