Dear Esther: Landmark Edition is currently free on Steam for a limited time as a promotional event for the game’s development studio The Chinese Room’s upcoming title, Little Orpheus.

The Landmark Edition is the 2017 Unity Engine remake of the original Dear Esther title, released in 2012. The remake has updated the original graphics and textures to immerse you even further in the beautifully desolate world it has to offer.

Dear Esther: Landmark Edition has you wander around on a lonely island off the northwest coast of Scotland, exploring landmarks to piece together fragments of other travelers’ stories.

As you walk around the island, a disembodied voice reads you pieces of a letter detailing the tragic events of the current in-game location.

After Dear Esther’s 2012 release, The Chinese Room created ‘Everybody’s Gone to the Rapture’ and consequently cemented a new genre of first-person adventure game known as a ‘walking simulator’.

If you are interested in experiencing the first walking simulator game or you have enjoyed other walking sims like What Remains of Edith Finch, ABZU, and Journey, then head over to Dear Esther: Landmark Edition’s Steam page and add the game to your library before the promotion ends.
