CoD: Black Ops forum users noticed this morning that the long awaited mod tools for the PC version of the game have finally been released. The mod tools are now available for download under the Tools section in Steam. To access them, simply navigate to your games library, and select the “tools” tab. The mod tools are available as a 2.9 GB download.
The mod tools do not provide a map editor – Activision still aims to charge for additional maps.
Users can use the mod tools to create custom game modes with tweaked damage and physics models, custom textures and other enhancements. It is worth noting that custom mods are not usable in ranked servers. This makes them ideal for competitive league matches, which are typically played on unranked or private servers.
We can be sure that an official Black Ops “pro-mod” will emerge soon. There is already an “unofficial” Black Ops pro-mod called CM MOD, but it is not endorsed and therefore using it online is a ban-able offense.
There are already guides to using the Black Ops mod-tools on the Treyarch Wiki.
Black Ops has made massive strides in the local competitive gaming community, with NGL boasting 65 teams and over 400 core players. It remains to be seen what affect the introduction of mod tools and an official pro-mod will have on the current Black Ops community, and its future.
Thanks Maplassie for the tip
