Capcom has announced that Street Fighter 6 will launch in 2023 with a returning roster of fighters like Ryu and Chun-Li, along with a couple of new contenders and the game’s first-ever open-world story campaign to explore.
The announcement came as part of Sony’s PlayStation State of Play showcase which took place Yesterday.
While the Street Fighter 6 trailer confirmed the return of veteran fighters Ryu and Chun-Li (both sporting a fresh new look) as well as newcomer Luke (who featured in Street Fighter 5’s final piece of downloadable content), it also introduced us to a brand-new fighter named Jamie.
Jamie is an expert dancer and a peacekeeper from Chinatown who aspires to walk in the footsteps of Yun and Yang, the Twin Dragons.
His select moves include:
- The Devil Inside — Jamie takes a swig out of his ki-unleashing drink to raise his Drink Level. Higher levels unlock access to additional moves.
- Luminous Dive Kick (Drink Level 1+) — While forward jumping, Jamie extends his leg and quickly drops to the ground. Useful as a surprise attack or a way to close the distance.
These are the only fighters Capcom has revealed, but more are likely to come.
Throughout the Street Fighter series, the game has brought fans many different gameplay experiences — from Fighting Ground, online matches, and Training Mode, to local versus battles, and more.
Street Fighter 6 will offer three game modes — Fighting Ground, Battle Hub, and World Tour (which is the one we’re most excited about).
Fighting Ground contains classic fighting game modes returning from previous titles, and includes online matches and the others mentioned previously.
Battle Hub, on the other hand, is simply a social hub where you can meet up with other players.
World Tour is an open-world story campaign that will allow players to explore the streets of Metro City, challenge other fighters, and presumably advance the story.
Additionally, Capcom has revealed that the game will feature real-time in-game commentary.
Fights will now include Commentary from well-known FGC (Fight Game Community) commentators, including English commentary from Jeremy “Vicious” Lopez and Japanese commentary from Aru.
These commentators will narrate what is happening on screen just like a real tournament (similar to the commentary you experience when playing FIFA for example).
While Capcom has yet to confirm an actual release date in 2023, Street Fighter 6 will be launched for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, PC via Steam, and Xbox Series X/S.
