Duke Nukem Forever PC patch adds more gun slots

29 July 2011

Gearbox has revealed that an incoming patch for the PC version of Duke Nukem Forever will increase the game’s weapon inventory slot count from two to four.

There is no immediate plan to release a similar patch for the console versions of the game.

The limitation of just two weapon slots was just one of the game’s widely publicised glaring flaws, and Duke Nukem Forever has subsequently gone down in history as one of the most disappointing games ever released, if not the most disappointing. After being stuck in development hell for over a decade, the game was finally released earlier this year, only to be panned by critics, earning a Metacritic score of 54/100.

Speaking about the limited weapons slot, studio boss George Broussard told Shacknews last year that “You cannot discount designing games for a modern world and part of that world is consoles where the bulk of the sales can be. And on those consoles you have a controller.”

“We tried for a long time to support lots of guns but we simply could not find a nice way to map it to a controller, despite trying 4-5 designs. We gave it enough time and decided to stop swimming against the current and adopt what was basically the ‘standard’.”

The incoming patch will also add some “other fixes and improvements that are still being tested”.
