Prior to its release, an Ubisoft official announced that the Steam version of From Dust would not ship with the publisher’s annoying always-online DRM. PC gamers celebrated the revelation, only to be kicked in the face by Ubisoft when they went and released the game with the afformentioned DRM anyway.
What ensued was a nasty back and forth battle between consumers determined to get their money back, Ubisoft not wanting to give them their money back, and Valve somewhere in the middle, giving some users money back, and redirecting others to Ubisoft.
The publisher eventually announced that it would be patching out the DRM; a process which took a number of weeks, which is a bit poor considering that hackers managed to remove the DRM within a few days.
If you already own the game, then downloading the latest patch should remove the DRM, and you should be able to play the game without being connected to the internet. If you were waiting for the DRM to be removed before purchasing From Dust, then now is your chance.
The game is currently available in the Steam store for $14.99 (R105).
