A few months ago a Gamespot employee posted supposed system requirements for Battlefield 3, which turned out to be completely unfounded. Since then the system requirements for the Alpha version of the game were published and they weren’t looking pretty for anyone with anything less than a quad-core CPU and 4GB of RAM.
EA has since posted updated system requirements for the public beta which is due to go live next week, on 27 September for pre-order incentive holders (and MyGaming competition winners) and on 29 September for the rest of the world.
Seeing as the game is out in just over a month, we can expect that the final system requirements will be very similar to these, if not identical.

The recommended system requirements for the beta are roughly in line with what the minimum requirements were for the Alpha, but it’s nice to see that DICE is making the game playable on more modest hardware.
However, if you want to play the game in all its glory, as shown in the breathtaking gameplay videos that have been released, then you might want to start thinking about upgrading if your PC doesn’t meet the recommended specs.
