Gears of War for PC breaks down

30 January 2009

Owners of the PC version of Gears of War are reporting on various forums that the game will not load, giving them an error stating “The certificate has expired or is not yet valid”.

The error is occurring because of an expired Windows digital certificate.

Developer Epic responded with “We have been notified of the issue and are working with Microsoft to get it resolved. Sorry for any problems related to this. I’ll post more once we have a resolution.”

The most likely culprit in this situation is Microsoft and not Epic.

There is no official fix for the problem just yet, however, gamers experiencing the problem may reset their system date to a time before the 28th Jan 2009, as this will allow them to continue playing the game until Microsoft or Epic come back with a more permanent solution.
