AGASA/DoGaming COD4 leagues explained

3 March 2009

Welcome to the beginners guide to competitive Call Of Duty 4 gaming in SA. For those of you who don’t know, Call of Duty 4, aka CoD4 is a first person shooter and has been very popular amongst the South African gaming community and the world for quite some time now. It is currently the largest competitive game in South Africa.

With over 50 teams playing in the AGASA/Do Gaming Online League, the league is by far the biggest of its kind in SA. Teams have been matched up with other similarly skilled teams across three divisions: the Premier League, First Division and Second Division. This seeding system was pioneered by AGASA and seems to suit the community well.

Division 2

Division 2 is the base of the tournament structure; all new and unranked teams will sign up and compete in Division 2. The first leg of 2009 sees nearly 30 teams taking part.

With so many teams, a full round robin would take a substantial amount of time; so instead, teams are broken into smaller, more manageable groups. Seedings for these groups is determined by AGASA to ensure that teams are evenly matched in each group. These groups then compete simultaneously with the goal of being promoted to the higher divisions.

To become eligible for division promotion, teams fight it out to be ranked in the top two of this division. After all the games have been played they face off in a double elimination playoff where promotions and relegations are determined.

Division 1

This year the first Division has 12 teams that take part in a similar round robin league.

These 12 teams have been seeded from previous competitions and have the chance to be promoted to the Premier League as well as being relegated to Division 2 if they drop to the bottom two of the table.

At the end of each leg, the bottom two teams are relegated to Division 2 and the top two teams are entered into the promotion playoffs.

Premier League

The Premier League is the cream of the crop. Teams that are in the Premier League are the best in the country having proven themselves either by winning knockout tournaments or climbing the ladder to the top. These twelve teams have only two main goals: to win the premiership or at least stay out of the bottom four.

These bottom four teams have to enter a playoff for their position at the end of the leg to avoid being relegated to Division 1 for the next leg of the tournament.

Champions League

The Champions League is a competition amongst the top eight teams in South Africa. It is held in a double elimination format and the competitors have to prove that they are truly the best team in South Africa.

Champions Leagues don’t happen too often and when they do each and every game is hard fought and incredible to watch.

Last year the Champion’s League was held between legs and the finals were played at rAge. Do Gaming will confirm this year’s activities as soon as they are finalised.
