Yesterday, THQ announced that it will be releasing its Warhammer 40K: Dawn of War MMO in its 2011 fiscal year, which begins in April 2010.
THQ also announced that Red Faction: Guerilla and Saints Row 3 will be released in the same period.
There is hardly any information available on the new upcoming Warhammer 40K MMO, but from what we can glean from various bits of information scattered accross the internet, the game will at least loosely follow the standard Massively Multiplayer Online Roleplaying gameplay and character development model, and will obviously be based in Games Workshop’s Warhammer 40,000 universe.
Relatively unknown developer Vigil Games is working on the game, and has made it known that it will be an MMORPG, and not an MMOFPS as the rumor mill would have us believe. There will however be a strong focus on squad based combat, with players having to make use of flanking and covering tactics.
It is also known that the game will be set in the 41st millennium. It has not yet been revealed which of the universe’s races will be playable, but it is known that there will not be any playable non-combat character classes. In true MMO fashion, characters will be customizable, and will have different equipable armors, weapons, trinkets, scrolls etc.
The developer has also mentioned that players will be able to visit a wide range of locations that span the Warhammer 40K universe, including Chaos Shrines, deserted battlefields, mysterious ruins, ancient structures, exotic alien temples and of course cities of various sizes.
Players will not have to group up with other players in order to play through the various stages of the game, however, doing so will obviously be beneficial in its more difficult PVE and PvP sections.
The game has nothing to do with Mythic’s Warhammer Online MMO other than the use of the Warhammer brand. Warhammer Online was made and is maintained by a completely different development team and publisher.
