New World of Warcraft patch causing crashes

17 April 2009

Reports that the recently released WoW patch 3.1 is causing game crashes are pouring in on the official WoW forums.

Apparently the new patch is causing crashes on a number of servers, with many areas, particularly Northrend, as well as a number of instances being offline. There is also the possibility that the general instability is simply being brought about by the massive influx of traffic on the servers, with players wanting to explore the new features provided by the update.

Blizzard has posted an official response on the WoW forums:

“We recognize that there are intermittent issues with select realms resulting in players getting stuck at “retrieving character list,” receiving “world server down” messages, or getting stuck loading into instances. While our database administrators are actively monitoring and working to resolve these issues, we would like to consolidate reports on the General forum to slow the rate at which new threads are being created.”

A number of unstable servers, realms and instances have been reported on the forums, including most Moonrunner instances as well as the server’s auction house. The newly introduced Ulduar instance is also reportedly experiencing numerous crashes on a number of servers, and some servers have reportedly experienced enitre realm crashes.
