Mythos lives on

8 May 2009

When Hellgate: London failed horribly, causing Flagship Studios to shut down, many lamented the loss not of their only official release, but rather of a game that was in development.

Originally, Mythos was designed as a development tool to help optimize the networking technology behind Hellgate: London. However, at some point during the testing, Flagship decided that it was actually turning out to be quite a nice game in its own right, and went on to announce its full scale development.

A Beta was released, and many gamers praised the isometric RPG hack and slash gameplay. Much was made of Flagships’ involvement with the community in developing Mythos, and the developer used the game’s officialforums to great effect in communicating with gamers.

Sadly, the game’s promising progression came to an end in August 2008 when Flagship closed its doors.

The entire staff from Flagship’s Seattle studio, incidentally the team that was working on Mythos, went on to join Runic Games soon after Flagship was dismantled. Last month, Runic Games announced its first game, Torchlight, which is billed as a hack and slash isometric online RPG, much like Mythos.

Many assumed that Torchlight would be the spiritual successor to Mythos, and they may still not be wrong. However, Korean publisher HanbitSoft, who ended up with the rights to Mythos has announced that it is continuing work on the official Mythos game.

“Many gamers have been worrying and wondering about Mythos, but they don’t have to worry now,” said HanbitSoft CMO Yoora Kim in a release. “We are doing our best to develop the game globally popular.” – HanbitSoft CMO Yoora Kim

There are no details to speak of at the moment, but we can officially confirm that Mythos is back in development. Many gamers are lamenting that the continuation of the games development means nothing as it is in the hands of a completely different developer.
