World of Warcraft: Striking it rich

14 June 2009

The way to truly get rich in World of Warcraft with minimal effort on your part is to cash in on the efforts of others. There’s no simpler way than to play the auction house.

What you’ll need

Thankfully, not much, but before you do anything you are going to want to pick up the Auctioneer mod or something similar. Auctioneer will help you to keep an eye out for good deals, get the market price of items anytime and anywhere, as well as simplify the process of posting your items.

Watching market trends

The first step to deeper virtual pockets is to keep your eyes open for trends in the market, or your realm as a whole, and exploit them. You simply need to be a lot more observant and truly take note of what the players around you are doing.

Auctioneer has a handy feature that will tell you what percentage of the average market price an item is selling for, allowing you to quickly spot good deals and take advantage of them.

If you notice the demand or price for an item is steadily starting to increase, purchase a few of said item at the current low price, then repost them when their average value is at a price-point that will allow you to make a nice profit..

You’d be wise to take note of upcoming changes in patches, as this is where you have to potential to truly strike it rich. For example, imagine that a class that is previously unable to dual-wield will be given this ability in an upcoming patch. The best thing to do in such an instance is to buy out weapons before the patch. The subsequent surge in demand (and increase in price) for weapons due to the update will ensure you a healthy profit.

Like in real world trade and commerce, it pays to keep an eye on the market and monitor trends in supply and demand.

Monopolising the market

This is a much more difficult option. You’ll also need a fair amount of gold in your coffers to start off with if you’re going to do this right and not bankrupt yourself. Pick an item (materials usually work best) and begin by buying out the cheapest of said item on the market.  Make sure to keep doing this so that only the most expensive of said item remains on the market.

This will fool people into thinking that the price of the item has risen, and as a result more people will start posting at the higher price that you in effect have set.

When this happens, you can post all the items you bought out for a price that will undercut your competitors, but still gain you a hefty profit. When people start to undercut you, buy out their items and repost them at a higher price. You’ll look like you’re being generous compared to your competitors, when in fact you’re the sneaky one.

Ultimately, you’ll simply be spending a few minutes buying out and reposting items every day instead of spending countless hours farming. It takes far less work and only demands slightly more intellect.
