Every month research firm NPD publishes, amongst other things, the top PC game sales in the USA at retail. Unfortunately these figures only include retail store purchased games, so the charts do not take into account the sales of digital distribution networks such as STEAM and Direct2Drive.
Having said that, the charts are still an interesting indication of what people are buying, although some would argue that the chart reflects the casual gaming market more as many core gamers prefer the download services.
1. World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King

3. World of Warcraft Battle Chest
4. World of Warcraft
5. Empire: Total War

Blizzard dominates the top five making up three of the top sales spots with World of Warcraft titles, while Maxis hangs in strong with The Sims 2 at second place.
Spore manages to climb five spots after receiving a $10 price reduction while Left 4 Dead and Empire: Total War hang in strong in the top ten barely moving from their April sales rankings.
Games like Left 4 Dead, Empire Total War and Demigod have sold well on Steam and Impulse Driven, and therefore this list is not a true reflection of their overall success in the market.
With the Sims 3 having been launched early in June and selling 1.4 million copies in its first week, we have a pretty good idea of what will take the number one spot in this month’s sales charts.
