X-Ray Anti-cheat System being used in local competitive gaming

1 September 2009

Although the Incredible Connection: CoD4 BOTCv3 Final may have involved the same teams as last year, there was one noticeable change to the final – the inclusion of the new X-Ray anti-cheating system. The system itself runs in the background scanning the players pc for cheats, in addition to taking a number of random screenshots during a map. The screenshots can then be reviewed by an admin team at X-Ray, in order to ensure the teams weren’t using cheats undetected by X-Ray or PunkBuster. The screenshots themselves are only uploaded at the end of a match, when the game client is closed, and so the players pings will not be impacted during the game. The screenshots can be uploaded at the gamer’s convenience, although the system does track if screenshots haven’t been uploaded by the user.

There is, however, a large disadvantage to the software. This would be the requirement for international bandwidth, since the screenshots have to be uploaded to an international website. This exact disadvantage generated a heated debate on the SGS (Saix Gaming Service) forums, with some users concerned about the amount of international bandwidth consumed by the program. Just before the recent BOTC final, these concerns were partially vindicated, when members from both teams had issues connecting to the server owing to a lack of international bandwidth. This resulted in the finals starting approximately 30 minutes late.

Although the first trial of the X-Ray system was a bit rocky, the support of AGASA and BOTC admin r0adrunner suggests that the system will continue to be used within both the AGASA and BOTC leagues.

Whether or not the system will be adopted by the iGame Intel league remains to be seen, although discussions with various admins suggests that it is unlikely at this stage. Despite the concerns voiced by the community, the majority still seem to view the system in a positive light, and this more than anything else would suggest that the program will continue to be used within the competitive Call of Duty 4 scene.
