5 awesome PC game mods

There’s no better way to breathe new life into an aging title than with a good mod. MyGaming has compiled a list of five that are sure to chase away boredom.

Diablo II  Median XL

This is an extensive overhaul for Diablo II and its expansion, Lord of Destruction. For those who love the game but have worn out the original characters and monsters, this is the perfect mod. Each character class has been completely overhauled and given all new skill trees, for a total of 210 new skills.

There are hordes of new monsters, champions, and bosses to be hacked and slashed, as well as new dungeons and quests (one of which even has the player as Baal). The graphics have also been given a shot in the arm, with a variety of new effects. Rounding it all off are tons of new items, runewords and crafting recipes. What are you waiting for?

Half-Life 2 GoldenEye: Source

GoldenEye: Source is a complete reimagining of the venerated Nintendo 64 game, GoldenEye 007. The team behind the development of the mod has recently overhauled the code for compatibility with the Orange Box. The mod not only attempts to recreate the scenes and gameplay of the classic, but also provide a modern touch using the power of the Source engine. New guns and maps have also been created to freshen things up.

Half-Life 2  Dear Esther

If you are looking for something different, then this is it. Dear Esther is an exercise in digital narrative – a first person ghost story in this case. As the player explores the environment, portions of the story are told through the discovery of letter scraps, all written to a woman named Esther. The scraps are presented randomly, so the player must draw their own conclusions. The mod has been extensively praised for its quality voice acting and unique soundtrack.

Deus Ex  The Nameless Mod

A complete overhaul of Deus Ex. The game is set in Forum City, an embodiment of the forum and bulletin board culture found on the Internet. All the petty squabbling among the citizens is usually kept in check by the Moderators, but one has gone missing and the remaining Moderators are hard pressed to maintain order. Cue the player, who is called upon to save the city from anarchy.

After seven years of production the mod boasts some impressive gameplay stats, such as 59 levels, over 200 000 words of dialogue, 14 hours of voice acting, 100 music tracks, two story arcs, and five end-game variations and cut scenes, to mention just a few. The Nameless Mod is also compatible with the High Definition Texture Project for Deus Ex, lending a much appreciated graphical upgrade to the game.

Fallout 3  FOOK2

FOOK is the Fallout Overhaul Kit, a compilation of visual and gameplay modifications, balance changes and new content. With a game like Fallout 3 it’s possible to find hundreds of great individual modifications, but FOOK2 is the best one stop solution for those who don’t want to muck about. There are over 150 new weapons and over 40 new items of apparel to be discovered, a lot of retexturing has been done for all the original weapons, as well as the general clutter in the environment. All of these new items and gameplay tweaks create a far more diverse experience throughout the Fallout 3 world. Be sure to check out the FOOK2 wiki for the full rundown on the changes.

Happy modified gaming!
