Confirmed: Starcraft II beta this month

11 February 2010

Yesterday we reported on a rumour that Blizzard may be very close to launching the StarCraft 2 beta.  This rumour began spreading when a preview of the new Battle.net build was posted by Blizzard, leading many to assume that the overhaul to the matchmaking software was complete, and that Blizzard would surely be launching the beta shortly.

Less than 24 hours after we reported on the rumour, Blizzard has confirmed that the beta is “ready to launch this month”.

This revelation came about as part of a speech by company CEO Mike Morhaime to investors.

According to Morhaime, this year is “shaping up to be the biggest in Blizzard history” due to the fact that it is the first time in twelve years that the company is launching two major products in one year.

Morhaime also added that the company is slated to “begin closed beta testing [for Starcraft II] this month” explaining that the multiplayer test will be available to participants in several countries.

It was also confirmed that the sequel is still on track for a mid 2010 release.

StarCraft II is the highly anticipated sequel to the iconic 90’s RTS StarCraft. StarCraft revolutionised competitive online gaming, and remains incredibly popular in South Korea where matches are televised and pro players can earn a healthy living. StarCraft II will be released as a trilogy, with each race (Marine, Protoss, Zerg) getting its own full game.
