Following the release of Blizzard’s Starcraft II beta FAQs yesterday, the publisher has today launched the long awaited beta.
The beta is currently going into its first wave, and all players invited to take part in this phase can now go on battle.net and play online.
It is at this stage still a little unclear how the online component will work for local gamers. Chances are that Battle.net will use a matchmaking protocol similar to that off Modern Warfare 2, in which case online play will be a straight forward reality. In any case, players will also be able to take on the AI in the beta.
Submissions for the beta were opened a while back, and those who made the cut for the first wave of the beta testing will be notified shortly via email. Blizzard chose participants based on their PC specs, with their aim being to get a wide range of PC’s in the beta, from the ultra high end dual GPU monsters to the lowly laptops and budget gaming rigs.
Those who do not receive an email to take part in the first wave need not despair, as they may be notified at a future point in the beta.
Blizzard also released the system requirements for the game.
PC Minimum Requirements
• Windows XP SP3/Vista SP1/Windows 7
• 2.2 Ghz Pentium IV or equivalent AMD Athlon processor
• 1 GB system RAM/1.5 GB for Vista and Windows 7
• 128 MB NVidia GeForce 6600 GT/ATI Radeon 9800 PRO video card
• 1024×768 minimum display resolution
• 4 GB free hard space (Beta)
• Broadband connection
Blizzard advises players to install the latest drivers for their hardware, as outdated drivers are known to cause serious issues with StarCraft II.
