An industry consortium referred to as the PC gaming alliance recently revealed the details behind its 2009 Horizons Report, which gives an update on the state of PC gaming globally.
Key among the findings is the fact that “PC gaming software revenue” has continued to show strong growth – raking in $13.1 billion. This is $2.1 billion more than in 2008.
Most of this growth, says Shack News, can be attributed to the popularity of digital distribution methods and paid downloads. According to the report boxed retail copies contributed “less than 20% of total revenue [in 2009].”
Although the overall market grew the report did indicate that major territiroes such as the US and Europe saw a decline compared to the record sales highs experienced in 2008. Among the reasons for these were “the severe worldwide recession” and the lack of major new releases in “high-end subscription games.”
Nonetheless the future looks positive with the report adding that “free-to-play games and social network sites continue to draw in thousands of new game players that can be progressively monetized.”
