Lord of the Rings goes free-to-play, doubles its income

11 October 2010

Supporting the case for free-to-play MMO’s and micro-transactions, Turbine has revealed that since dropping the subscription fees from Lord of the Rings Online, it has doubled the income generated by the game.

Since the game became free-to-play, it has seen a 400% increase in total active players. 20% of former Lord of the Rings Online players returned since it became free-to-play, and the game’s peak user concurrency shot up 300%.

This is hardly surprising, after all, LotRO is a great MMO. Based on Tolkien’s seminal fantasy fiction masterpiece – the Lord of the Rings trilogy – the game employs tried and tested MMORPG mechanics and implements them within the author’s incredibly popular fantasy world.

Most interestingly, perhaps, is that 52% of players have purchased something from within the premium content store.
