IS re-launches local HoN servers

9 December 2010

South African Heroes of Newerth players have a had a tough time of late. First IS and SAIX shut down their local servers earlier this year, leaving iGame as the sole server provider for the game in SA.

Then, iGame announced that they would no longer be hosting Heroes of Newerth servers, after disagreements with the game’s developer S2 games caused a communication breakdown.

This meant that for a few days, there were no local servers for South African HoN players to play on. HoN is a fast paced competitive game, and players need to be quick with casting spells and micromanaging their hero in order to be effective in high level play. Therefore, the high latency experienced on international servers when playing from SA makes it difficult for gamers to compete.

Earlier this week, MWEB confirmed that they had been approached by S2 games, and were investigation the possibility of launching local HoN servers.

However, it would seem that IS has beaten MWEB to the punch:

“It is with great pleasure that we announce the return of Heroes of Newerth to ISGaming and South Africa. After a discussion with S2Games they have agreed to setup the server. The server should be live at the time of this news post.”

This is great news for gamers, as IS peers with all major local internet service providers (ISPs), which means that the majority of players should get a decent pings. Had MWEB secured HoN servers on their network, Telkom users would not have been able to connect with local latencies due to a lack of direct peering between the two ISPs.
