World of StarCraft being developed by fans

18 January 2011

When rumours began emerging a few years ago that Blizzard was working on a completely new MMO which was not WarCraft related, fans began speculating as to what it could be. One theory which gained significant momentum was that the developer was working on ‘World of Starcraft.’ Many saw it as a logical next step for Blizzard, who had already MMO-ified WarCraft.

Sadly, it was not to be, and Blizzard later announced that the new MMO was not based on any existing Blizzard IP.

However, the rumour planted thousands of tiny seeds in the hearts of geeks around the world, and by the looks of things, at least one is germinating. A small group of dedicated StarCraft fans are busy working on a custom Starcraft II map called “World of Starcraft.” Anyone who has spent any time in the StarCraft II map editor will know that it is a fairly powerful and dynamic piece of technology. In fact, calling it a “map editor” is a bit like calling Little Big Planet 2’s level creator a ‘level creator.’ The reality, in both cases, is that innovative users can create full-fledged custom games that bear litte resemblance to the original games on which they are based.

World of StarCraft is currently in pre-alpha state and has a dedicated community portal set up.

The developers’ goals

Our mission is not to clone the existing World of Warcraft but rather to trim the fat of its tedious gameplay and harness the best elements of it to create an exciting experience within Starcraft II.

World of Stacraft (WoSC) will take the cooperative raiding experiences of WoW and harness them.

WoSC will not be about endless hours of grinding but rather put a focus on scripted boss fights that reap glorious reward upon success.

Because of the limitations of GEs banking system, only three things will be saved to a character.

1. Phat Lewtz: Loot will be the major role of character progression in WoSC. We will create hundreds of custom weapons and items for players to fight for in their quest to dominate the galaxy. These weapons and items will be both exciting and siutational… not just… whoo yay I got a new sword that does more DPS and has a different model file… yay…
Weapons and items will have their srengths and weaknesses depending on the situation so it will be a less linear experience than just grinding and grinding for the next weapon so you can toss away your current one.

2. Minerals and Rank: Minerals will be gained while progressing through raid instances and will be used to purchase items and weapons. Rank will be attained by killing raid bosses and will unlock the ability to purchase higher grade equipment.

3. Allocation Points: AP will be granted from killing bosses and can be used to premanently boost a stat of your choice. The stat bonuses are very subtle and will hardly separate a casual player from a hardcore player.

Get involved

The team is currently looking for people to get involved, and need “as many data experts as possible.”

“I (Ryan), will be triggering most of the user interface as well as scripting the raid fights. That’s not to say that no one else can jump right in and help out with that stuff too.”

“I will be directing this project and approving what goes into it and what does not, but I am a VERY open person and if your ideas are solid they will surely go into the game.”

They are also looking for play testers, but are limiting applicants to owners of the North American version at the moment.

There is a wealth of additional information available on the project, including classes, abilities, items and so on. You can head on over to the link supplied above to find out more.
