A few years ago, if I told you that I was playing MMOs on my PS2, you would laugh at me.
Well, things have changed over the past few years, and MMOs are not exclusive to PC gamer anymore. When an MMO releases, most of the time it will hit consoles at the same time.
If you have an Xbox One or PS4 you can play these MMOs, which can provide some epic online gaming sessions.
The Elder Scrolls Online: Tamriel Unlimited
In 2013 The Elder Scrolls Online launched as a subscription-based MMO. The MMO cost around R150 a month, and players felt that it was too much to ask for the game, as most of the game’s mechanics relied on heavy grinding and farming.
In 2014, Bethesda scrapped the subscription module in favor for a one-time purchase option when they released The Elder Scrolls Online: Tamriel Unlimited. Since then, the game has received overwhelming feedback from fans on PC, Xbox One, and PS4.
The game has been a huge success, spawning tons of DLC packs which take from Coldharbour to the main city in Cyrodiil to fight in the arena. The Dark Brotherhood and the Thieves Guild have also just been released.
If you want a solid MMORPG with hours upon hours of gameplay, and a massive open world to explore, then this is it. With Player Housing and much more releasing in the future, Bethesda are invested in expanding the game as much as possible.
Destiny
Many people do not like it, but what is there not to like? Bungie successfully merged the FPS genre with guns and an MMO to build one of the best shooting experiences in gaming.
The game has a solid RPG system which sees you grow your guardian as you gain new gear and level up. The game is ever-changing, with new content and patches released to add new experiences to the game.
When you are not shooting a Hive in the head, you are headed into PvP to take on other Guardians with the gear you have equipped. We have Trials of Osiris, the ultimate PvP experience, which sees you go up against three Guardians in a level advantage-enabled arena.
If anything, Destiny is a social experience which needs to be played with friends. Whether you are raiding or going into PvP, it is best done with friends, and it makes the experience much more enjoyable.
Heavensward: Final Fantasy XIV
A Realm Reborn: Final Fantasy XIV has come a long way since its release in 2013. The game has since received a new expansion pack called Heavensward, which brought two new job classes, and a ton of new content to the game.
Final Fantasy XIV is a massive game that takes you across hundreds of locations as you explore the world of Eorzea. Ride a Chocobo or fly a dragon through the skies. Become a miner, clothier, chef, fisherman, or anything you have ever wanted as you take on jobs and level up to gain new ways to make things.
The battle system has been tailor-made to suit the DualShock 4, so you will never feel like you are getting the short end of the stick when playing the game on console. If you do want to opt for a mouse and keyboard, the game does support one.
Neverwinter
Neverwinter is a free-to-play action RPG that has just released on PS4 and has been available on Xbox One for some time now. The game is based off the acclaimed Dungeons and Dragons series, so expect lots of dungeons and well, dragons.
The game has received multiple content updates since launch, which has added new raids, combat options, mounts, and cosmetic changes. If anything, Neverwinter is a content-packed experience.
The PS4 version of the game comes with all 9 expansions to date, with more content releasing soon for the game.
Expect massive battles against hordes of enemies as you go about your everyday life in the game. If anything, the game will be the biggest MMO on console to date.
