Red Orchestra 2: Heroes of Stalingrad is an upcoming WWII FPS that focus heavily on the Battle of Stalingrad.
The Battle of Stalingrad was a decisive battle against the Nazi war machine that stretched over the period of 17 July 1942 to 2 February 1943. The German army was ultimately defeated, making German victory in the East impossible. The Soviet victory at Stalingrad has been described as the salavation of European civilization.
In the contemporary gaming environment, the once-popular World War II sub-genre of FPS has taken a back seat to modern combat themed titles. Red Orchestra 2 could prove to be a welcome return to the WWII theatre.
Over the weekend (19 November 2010), the Red Orchestra 2: Heroes of Stalingrad Steam product page went live, and now publisher/developer Tripwire Interactive has released some new screenshots from the game.
The screenshots come from three of the winter maps featured in Red Orchestra 2 (Fallen Fighters, Red October and Commissar’s House), showing the environments, lighting and elements of the first-person cover system. Find them sprinkled about this article or have a closer look in MyGaming’s Red Orchestra 2: Heroes of Stalingrad image gallery.
The game, featuring German and Russian campaigns, in both single and multiplayer, as well as co-op modes, will be available in 2011 for the PC. No plans for other platforms have yet been announced.
About Red Orchestra 2
Red Orchestra 2: Heroes of Stalingrad is the follow-up to Tripwire’s original hit multiplayer PC title, Red Orchestra: Ostfront 41-45, which has gone on to sell nearly half a million units since launch. Tripwire interactive was founded by the team that won the 2004 Make Something Unreal competition, and Red Orchestrra was their debut retail title, winning numerous awards.

The sequel will feature a greatly expanded multi-player experience, with multiple new game modes, a complete first person cover system, destructible terrain, enhanced weapon mechanics and realistic WWII combat.
In addition, the game will feature single-player and co-op game modes, allowing the player to play a full campaign from the Russian perspective, and in a first for an FPS title, a campaign from the German perspective.

Tripwire promises an improved version of their already robust weapon handling system, with new features and sounds. Tanks will feature fully-operational 3D interiors, hugely enhancing the original game’s vehicle experience.
Tripwire has confirmed that they will be supporting the game with ongoing free content updates beyond release and a full SDK to allow for user-created content from launch.

The key features
Play as Both Armies – Follow the German army as they assault the city of Stalingrad, to the banks of the Volga. Follow the Soviet army as it holds the city against all the odds then destroys the Axis forces.
Infantry and Armor – Players can play and command infantry squads and tanks recreated in the highest levels of detail, with fully-operational 3D interiors.
Free form single-player scenarios – WWII combat recreated as brutal battles, at close-quarters and at long ranges – not as a Hollywood-style movie.

Historically-accurate maps – Whole sections of the city will be recreated, more accurately than ever before, as well as areas outside the city. All these sections will be used for SP and MP play.
Persistent Stats and Player Progression – Grow in rank, earn medals, improve your abilities, and become a Hero.
Co-op mode – Allows the player to invite one or more friends to join in fighting through the entire campaign, fighting alongside each other, trying to protect and support each other and win the day.

Hero Rank – Gaining Hero Rank takes you into the top echelon of players. Heroes look different, have different capabilities, and affect the morale of other players.
Emotional Modeling – Morale and emotional states give the AI game play depth unheard of in the genre. Confident AI hold their ground and perform their duties effectively. Shock tactics can send enemy AI into a panic – mow them down as they flee for cover. AI’s fear of death balanced with their sense of honor provides an unpredictable and exciting battlefield experience.
Multiple MP Game Styles – Different game types, including Tripwire’s objective system enhanced as Territory mode, with Firefight, Skirmish and Countdown.

Full multiplayer campaign “meta-game” promises to bring more depth and meaning to individual battles.
