Sony has announced the final specifications of the PlayStation 4, retail price points and the upgraded Playstation Eye as an optional component.
At Sony’s Playstation conference in February this year the company talked about the hardware inside the chassis, the games they were working on and the kind of things that gamers can expect from the console and its peripherals in the near future. Pricing wasn’t announced then and speculation had it that the company was waiting to see how Microsoft was going to handle several sensitive topics, including pricing.
It has now been revealed that the PS4 will retail for US$399, with the PlayStation Eye an optional component at US$59. This is compared to the Xbox One, which has a retail price of US$499, and comes bundled with the impressive Kinect 2.0.
The table below details the PS4’s and its peripherals’ specifications and recommended pricing for various markets.

The console is somewhat similar to the Xbox One (which has a retail price of US $499) and matches the PS4 in terms of memory size, hard drive size and core count. However, the PS4 has a GPU that’s 50% faster and beefier, in addition to a remarkably low US $399 price point and no restrictions on used game sales, trading and renting of games, lending of games to friends and region locks.
In addition, Sony also announced the Playstation Eye, which is an optional add-on, and confirmed pricing for the Dualshock 4 controller. An interesting factoid also popped up in the PS4 round-table Q&A where it was mentioned that the holes on the controller aren’t for a micrphone – in a nod to what Nintendo did with the Wii U Motion controller, it’s a small mono speaker that brings sound closer to you. This was later officially confirmed by Sony in a specification sheet released to the press.
