No Man’s Sky players on PlayStation 4 have discovered over 10 million virtual species in the game, developer Sean Murray said on Twitter.
The Hello Games co-founder noted that that is more species than has been discovered on Earth.
“What is going on!” he said.
According to a 2011 Nature article, the estimated number of species on Earth is pegged at 8.7 million.
Discovering solar systems, planets, and alien species is currently the game’s only online component.
It lets players name their finds and register them on the game’s servers.
“It is a testament to how amazing our network coders are that Discoveries are still working at all,” said Murray, who co-founded Hello Games.
For instance over night we hit 10 million species discovered in NMS… that's more than has been discovered on earth.
