51.8 million PS3s sold worldwide

14 September 2011

Speaking at the Tokyo Game Show this morning (14 September 2011), Sony revealed that it has sold 51.8 million PlayStation 3 consoles worldwide.

The PSP has sold a whopping 71.4 million units, although this number doesn’t touch Nintendo DS sales figures which topped 147.9 million at the end of July 2011.

The last time Microsoft revealed Xbox 360 sales, the console was sitting on 55 million units sold, so while the PS3 is gaining ground on the green and white box, it seems unlikely that it will overtake it anytime soon.

According to VGChartz‘s estimates, Microsoft has sold 55.6 million Xbox 360s, and Sony has managed to move 52.2 million PS3s.

The Wii is sitting on an estimated 87.7 million units, making it the highest selling home console of this generation.

The Nintendo DS is by far the world’s top selling console, and the only gaming device out of this generation to break 100 million units sold.
