With PS4 heading toward its release on 13 December 2013, and Sony having a strong presence at rAge 2013, MyGaming spoke to Ster Kinekor Entertainment CEO Mario dos Santos to discuss the future of the PlayStation 3 in South Africa.
Post-PS4 launch, Dos Santos said that there will still be an effort to drop prices on PS3 systems.
“We’d obviously love to get as many consoles into market as possible and we’ll continue to put pressure in that regard, but our position is quite difficult, as the exchange rate continues to work against us. So those market pressures make it particularly difficult, but I’m confident that we will see further price drops, but I don’t think it’ll mirror with what we’ve seen in the past.”
Looking to the PlayStation 2’s impressive legacy and longevity as an example, Dos Santos is confident that PS3 will share the same lifespan.
“There is still some great upcoming content for the PS3, so I think everyone recognises that until there’s this critical mass for PS4, then the PS3 will still be the go-to console and we expect PS3 to live side-by-side with PS4,” said Dos Santos.
