Before we get into the new gameplay footage, I would like to put on the record that I am still waiting for my confirmation e-mail from EA saying I have been accepted into the Battlefield Hardline beta trials. Until then, I will enjoy they game vicariously through others.

VG24/7 were among those who got their hands on Hardline’s beta – the PS4 version – and have kindly posted some of the the frenetic gameplay online.

The video, posted below, shows the two teams – one composed of cops, the other of robbers – trying to lay claim to stacks of cash that have fallen from a bank convoy. Grab you squad car and assault rifle and get that cash before you are killed, is the premise of the map, which contains a similar format and play style to Battlefield 4, but on a smaller, urban scale.

Battlefield Hardline is being developed by Visceral Games (Dead Space, Dante’s Inferno) for EA, with more focus to be put on the single-player campaign compared to previous Battlefield games.

Battlefield: Hardline is scheduled to launch on 21 October 2014 for PC, PS4, PS3, Xbox One, and Xbox 360.

I’m cautiously optimistic about this now that I’ve seen some gameplay. My biggest complaint with Battlefield was always the size of the maps (shock! horror!) because I just got over running for 20 mins to get to the action and then being insta killed by someone with a million more play hours than me, and thenhaving to rinse/repeat the 20 min walk. The smaller maps may fix this for me but that remains to be seen. Honestly my biggest disappointment based on what I’m seeing so far is that they have not embraced all the gameplay possibilities allowed for with the policing genre. Instead they have chosen to basically just re-skin BF4. Where are the tazers? The handcuffs? The police radio? The hostage scenarios, the police sniper set up in the building? There was such a great opportunity here for more set-piece scenarios and it’s all been abandoned because OMG EXPLOSIONS GUNS ACTION GOGOGOGOGO
