Sony wants you to game on a PlayStation, we all know that. How will they get you to do it? Well, offering a lot of free games is a good start.
As part of their main E3 presentation, Sony announced the PlayStation Free-to-Play initiative, which will give gamers access to a “robust catalogue” of free titles.
Here are the initial titles Sony announced as part of the initiative.
Guns Up!
Guns Up! sees players taking control of a general who must manage his troops and resources, deploy forces where needs be, place land mines and air strikes, and, basically, blow the enemy into oblivion. The game will cater for cross-play, meaning gamers can take each other on whether they have a PS4, PS3, or PS Vita.
PlanetSide 2
PlanetSide 2, available on the PS4, is massive multiplayer FPS where gamers battle it out in an “all-out planetary war”. Soldiers will have to master infantry, and air and ground vehicle gameplay if they want to survive.
War Thunder
War Thunder made its console début on the PS4, and features cross-platform online multiplayer. The World War 2 MMO contains enough planes and tanks to keep you occupied for quite some time, and that warm and fuzzy feeling you get when downing a Nazi bomber will keep you coming back for more.
Loadout
When I first saw the trailer for this game, and watched an overweight woman in a g-string tea-bagging someone she had just pwned, I knew it was a game for me. Besides that fact that the game is recommended by 9/10 moms*, the multi-player shooter comes with a ton of powerful weapons itching to blow something – or someone – up. Loadout is exclusive to the PS4.
*No actual moms were surveyed about Loadout.
Kingdom Under Fire 2
Kingdom Under Fire 2 is a new action RTS MMO in which players can control both troops and a hero at the same time. Start off as a lowly mercenary and make your way up the blood-soaked ladder of power until you are ruler of the world.
PAIN Free to Play
Put a character into a super-sized, ultra-powerful slingshot and launch them into people, cars, buildings, and whatever you see in front of you, with the aim of causing as much pain and destruction as possible. Pain F2P will launch exclusively for the PS3 before the end of the year.
Fat Princess: Piece of Cake
Fat Princess, coming to the PS Vita, requires players to take command of four different characters who are on a mission to rescue the princess. According to Sony, the game will have a “comic medieval battle royale” theme, and will see you feeding cake to the princess to unlock her powerful attacks.
Those who reach level 15 in the game will receive an unlock code to download the original Fat Princess for the PS3, for free.
BigFest
Do you love music? Do you love music festivals? Then BigFest is for you. Discover hidden talent, help unsigned artists climb the charts, and build the ultimate mega-festival. Players can also visit friends’ festivals and either assist or sabotage the event. Cue finger-pyramid of evil contemplation.
Reaper
Reaper is an action RPG platformer where players take control of one of Death’s Reapers who has turned against her master after refusing to take the life of her own daughter. Sounds intriguing.
Onigiri
This MMO is based on myths, fables, and legends of old Japan. You play as a descendent of the ancient Oni, and, along with your 8 companions, must set forth against the Kamigui.
Neverwinter
Neverwinter, another MMO, combines elements of an RPG with fast-paced combat and Dungeons and Dragons lore. You start your adventure in the Forgotten Realms and are tasked with keeping the city of Neverwinter safe from its would-be invaders.
My Singing Monsters
My Singing Monsters is a world-building game where players collect and “breed” adorable monsters. What sets this game apart from other games in this genre (wait, their is a monster collecting and breeding genre?) according to the developers is that these critters will dance and sing, too.
