Resistance 3 includes something called a “PSN Pass”

6 July 2011

What’s a “PSN Pass”? Well, that’s anybody’s guess for the moment, and the only live specimen we’ve caught in the wild have is a Resistance 3 boxshot that turned up on German gaming forum, Konsolentreff. The game is branded with a PSN Pass logo, and the text

“PSN Pass Network features only available in countries that have PlayStation Store”.

Is Sony launching some sort of one-time online pass system like EA, THQ, Codemasters, and others have implemented, and somewhat controversially at that?

Sometime last year, Sony’s Andrew House told GamesIndustry.biz that the company was mulling over doing just that, saying that “On the principle of making online portions of the game available or unlocked from the disc-based release for a fee, we’re broadly supportive of that.

“And we’re exploring actively the same option for our own content.”

He did, however, add that the network’s free multiplayer access was responsible for “a lot of the success of PSN today”, suggesting that they’re unlikely to charge a subscription fee on the service.

Stay tuned, free online multiplayer game fans.
