Following speculation yesterday after a boxshot of Resistance 3 turned up branded with a “PSN Pass” logo, Sony has confirmed they’re implementing a single-use code system for online multiplayer, as previously seen over at EA, THQ, and other publishers.
“We are always evaluating new programs for our online offering, and starting with Resistance 3 this September, we will be instituting a network pass program for PS3 games with online capabilities,” a company spokesperson tells IGN.
“This program will be game-specific. Games that are a part of this program will include a single-use registration code that grants the account holder redeeming the code full online access for that title.
“This is an important initiative as it allows us to accelerate our commitment to enhancing premium online services across our first party game portfolio.”
I love how charging people for stuff is described as “enhancing premium online services”, as though it benefits the player in some way.
One could almost imagine GLaDOS saying it.
That said, if this resolves the dispute between publishers and secondhand retailers, is it really such a bad thing? Of course the answer will be yes if you ask anyone who frequently buys games used games.
