New PS3 firmware update 3.70 made special for PlayStation Plus subscribers

10 August 2011

Sony is prepping to launch a new firmware update for the PlayStation 3, bringing it up to version 3.70 and bundling in a bunch of New and Improved! features.

That includes an option to automate data updates, exclusively for PlayStation Plus subscribers, with an auto upload function for save game backups and auto Trophy syncing.

More generally, a recommendation function is being added so you can share links to your favourite PlayStation Store stuff with PSN friends.

There’s also a new TV/Video Services category, including streaming media applications like Hulu PLUS, Netflix, and VUDU, although this doesn’t really apply to Saffers. We can only dream.

Finally, a few new system tweaks for Blu-ray 3D playback:

• 3D support will now be available when accessing Java-based special features on Blu-Ray
• DTS-HD MA, DTS-HD HR decoding/bit stream output (or lossless audio) will be supported while playing Blu-ray 3D movies.
• 3D digital photos in MPO format can now be viewed in 3D on the XMB and in the Photo Gallery app.

The update is apparently launching “soon”.
