The PS3 may have been hacked again

21 October 2011

Early reports are coming through suggesting that Sony’s PlayStation 3 has once again been successfully hacked.

Just like the previous successful hack, the new “JB2” hack allegedly takes the form of a USB dongle that plugs into the console and effectively bypasses its security features.

Videos of the JB2 dongle in action have been posted, showing somebody plugging the device into the console before powering it up and loading into a custom XMB screen which seems to open up options that should only be available on developer consoles.

If this is as it seems, then the hack should make it possible to run unsigned code on the PS3.

Apparently, unlike previous jailbreaks, the JB2 hack does not make it possible to run games from the harddrive. Instead, it makes it possible for the console to read burned PS3 disks, passing them off as legitimate Blu-ray disks.

Only a limited range of games have been cracked to run on consoles using the JB2 dongle.

It is still not 100% confirmed that the JB2 dongle is the real deal, and Sony has yet to comment on the situation, so we’ll be keeping an eye on this one over the next few days.
