Gears of War 3 dev build leaked [Update]

4 July 2011

[Update] Epic and Microsoft have issued a statement saying that the companies are “working closely with our security teams and law enforcement to address the situation”, although it’s kind of a bit late for that now. They’ve also reminded everybody that “this content is not from a final build and is not representative of what fans will enjoy when the game launches worldwide on 20th September 2011.”

And people who like to steal stuff for the dubious honour of being able to say they played it before everybody else have done it again – almost three months ahead of its September launch, an incomplete dev build of Gears of War 3 has been leaked to the torrents.

According to a post on NeoGAF, and now backed up by plenty of YouTube evidence, the version includes most, if not all, of the single player and multiplayer components of the game. Be warned, there are spoilers everywhere.

Obviously enough, the leaked “JTAG” version of the game can only be run on modified consoles and devkits, and the game is reportedly crammed with bugs, glitches, and placeholder artifacts. Which probably won’t make the guys over at Epic Games any happier about the leak, although they’ve yet to drop any official statement on the matter.

Whether this has any impact on the game’s continued development and release remains to be seen.
