New Xbox 360 Controller Revealed

Yesterday the internet was ablaze with rumours that Microsoft was planning a brand new Xbox 360 controller redesign, with emphasis being placed on a revised D-Pad design.

As it turns out, the rumours were spot on, and the new controller has been confirmed. The new controller will feature a “pop-up” D-pad, that will be adjustable by rotating it. Gamers can play with the D-pad compressed into a flat disk, or alternatively, give it a twist and have the cross shaped button controller raised.

Many gamers will agree that the raised D-pad will provide added precision, thanks to what should be an overall more defined feel. This should come in most handy in fighting games, which make heavy use of this particular portion of the controller.

Not only will the new controller tweak functionality, but it will also provide an aesthetic overhaul. For the first time, the A, B, X and Y buttons will be grey, black and white, as opposed to the traditional bright blue, yellow, red and green.

The controller will become available in the US on November 9, and is expected to only arrive in Europe in February 2011. We can expect local availability to coincide roughly with the European release, although we have contacted Microsoft SA for official confirmation.

So far only a US price has been confirmed; $64.99 (R470), and the controller will only be available with the Play and Charge kit.
