South African Xbox 360 gamers have walked a long road since the console was launched back in late 2005. It first became available here at a time when multiplayer console gaming was almost exclusively dominated by split-screen functionality. Also, bandwidth was so expensive back then that downloading anything from Xbox Live was just not viable for most. So it was not such a huge deal that South Africa was excluded from the Xbox Live footprint.
Now, however, Xbox Live is arguably the console’s best feature. With a massive catalogue of fantastic Xbox Live arcade games, not to mention a fantastic online gaming community, the lack of local Xbox Live support is a serious problem. Fortunately, there are work arounds, and most core Xbox 360 gamers create accounts by falsifying their residential addresses. Furthermore, it is possible to buy MS points locally from the likes of MSPoints.co.za, which solves the problem of not being able to use local credit/debit cards.
When asked in recent years if we would be getting local Xbox Lvie support, Microsoft’s stock response has been “it’s coming soon.” Earlier this year we got something a bit more concrete, and Microsoft SA confirmed that we will be getting Live in SA in November.
An actual date has not been specified, but we have it on very good authority that something big will be announced tomorrow, and we can pretty much guarantee that it will be a release date.
