Halo 5’s Battle of Shadow and Light update: a lot more content for free

19 November 2015
Halo 5: Guardians - Battle of Shadow and Light

Four new maps, two new armour sets (Shinobi and Tacer), new vehicle variants sporting new paintjobs, new weapon skins, a bad ass assassination animation and legendary Reqs; that’s a lot of new content.

Halo 5: Guardians

So what will it set you back? Nadda. It’s completely free for one and all. Merely load up Halo 5: Guardians, and you’ll find the ‘Battle of Shadow and Light’ content update waiting for you.

Like the games or not, the Halo franchise has always gone above the call of duty (we’ll let you decide whether the pun was intended or not) when offering more content than is ever strictly necessary – the Foundry is proof of that.

And now the Halo team at 343 Industries as well as some community modders have come together to create 4 new maps, all of which belong to the new Big Team Battle playlist, a playlist intended for 8v8 games.

Beyond the additions, the update makes some small quality of life improvements, tweaks and fixes a few issues plaguing Spartans out in the field:

  • Fixed an aiming issue that could occur due to variance in controller hardware. Head here (Halo 5 Aiming & Controllers) for more details.
  • Made a variety of tuning tweaks to Warzone Assault, including the below. Head here (Warzone Assault Tuning Changes) for more details.
    • Faster REQ leveling
    • Decreased base capture time from 20 seconds to 16 seconds
    • Reduced starting grenade count to 1
  • Disabled Friendly Fire in SWAT
  • Increased respawn time from 1 second to 3 seconds in SWAT
  • Added the “deliver” nav point for vehicle drivers who have a friendly flag carrier as a passenger.
  • Fixed an issue where players were able to use the driver and gunner seats while holding the flag. Now, the flag carrier can only sit in the passenger seat.
  • Improved Post-Game-Carnage-Report consistency.

We particularly like the removal of friendly fire from SWAT. We’ve been trolled more than once by a frienemy (Frenemy), and losing our head to a friendly round has lost its charm.

For a more detailed look at all of the additions and changes made, we’d suggest checking out this blog post by 343 Industries.

Whether you agree that Halo 5: Guardians hit its mark or not, there’s no denying the scope of content and replayability this latest title in the franchise has.

And with Battle of Shadow and Light, it just got that much bigger.

And by-the-by cheaters, exploiters and those who would otherwise abuse the system, 343 Industries has started banning offenders. Good riddance.
