SA Community Game Dev - For learners too

Hi Guys
Thought I would start a thread on this.

A discussion came up that there are a few locals wanting to get into the game dev.
So why not start a game purely made by the SA community to build and learn at the same time.Honestly guys if you always wanted to know what it is like, or how it's done, don't be scared. Some of us will be pro's, some of us are noobs. At the end we have 1 goal. A Playable FPS multiplayer shooter that was totally made locally.

The game will be a FPS game that shall be extended over time.

Edit:- (Used for later when deciding what game engine to use)

Please post here if you are interested.
Advise what you would be interested in doing aswell.

I list you guys are your code will have to incorporate replication.

ArchieChoke - If we go to Unity 3D, I would have to pull myself out of any promgramming till I can relate to the language as I know, T-SQL , VB, C++. So I can re-assign myself to modelling, map creation , Texturing and Level Designing.

oltma - Please advise your area's.

Ok here is the selection of Engine's to choose from:-

UE 4 - Unreal Engine 4 ($20 once off)
Unity 3D - Free version ofcourse
CryEngine - Wouldn't recommend, highly professional in its usage and really not user friendly, also monthly fee.
monogame - Haven't used.

Modelling tools that can be used:-
Blender - Complete free and just works
3DSMax - Not Free
Miaya - Not Free

Texturing software:-
Adobe Photoshop - Create tool at a price
Ms paint - Free but not a great tool
Google SketchUp - Free and works pretty well, but requires some tutorials and some reading.

Synchronization of files:-
I am going to recommend doing a google drive backups.I have 1 TB available to handle the raw asset files. Other users get 15GB free so this is a great option.

Will edit more later.

While I've only just started learning javascript, I would be interested in maybe the music side of it, I could probably contribute much more on that side.

Also would love to learn more about the programming side along with the more experienced guys.

As great as this sound, will it not be easier to start with a level for Unreal Tournament, and then build from there? As we build the level we can mod the engine later?

The reason I say this is if we start with too big dreams we crash harder. Big dreams consist of lots of small goals.

And btw, I am very keen to be a part of this in any way I can!

I'll help with some coding, want to polish my rusty skills a bit. Want to focus on gameplay mechanics and possibly physics.

Hey guys just wanted to post a video I have done in UE4, some of the objects are from tutorials and some I made myself. Non of the models are mine, nor the animations, everything is out of the box no additional fee's were paid.

I apologies for the poor quality.

Looks awesome Archie, so would your preferred engine be UE ?
Thanks. Personally I would prefer it as for beginners it's dead easy using blueprints in all areas. But we are a community it can't be based on what I want. It should be based on what's good for all. Price, time to learn and build things and iteration times.

That vid was work I did over December.

Will list more later.

Do you guys have a SorceForge site yet? It has the best tools to just manage all the parties involved in creating a game. Because managing the people is usually the hardest part of a project.

As for my skills..

Game Programming
Programmers - Damn good at it, bit rusty though. What language are you guys thinking of using. My vote is Unity 3D.
Audio Engineer - Know someone that might be interested in this
Graphics Programmer - Beyond my skills
Network Programmer - Beyond my skills

Not as yet, we are firstly seeing what type of response there would be. So far seems to be pretty good!

Hahahaha, I seem like a one man team. lol. We have enough programmers, so I'll step aside on that part. ;)

Blender and Unity 3D works brilliantly together. No exporting / importing, the blend files can be used directly in Unity as an asset, including the animation cycles.

Dunno about the other engines, but I like new things, and it doesn't affect my departments too much.

As for other software..
I use GIMP and Inkscape for texturing and anything that's not 3D.

Updated the list, will add source control on Source files for the programmers later.

Awesome, you might want to take me out of Network Programming :S. I have done some game design theory courses and learning JS, and will help on the sound / music creation if we need that.

EDIT: As far as engines go I don't mind the UE $20 once off fee, that seems incredibly cheap. So either that or Unity.

Also used to be pretty decent in Sketch up so will just have brush up a bit on that and will see what I could input there.

I'm pretty decent at texturing and level design if you'll be needing an assistant in those two categories.

If we are going with UE4 then I'll have to step down from a programming role. Have not touched C++ in almost 15 years.

Dam I need to get a poll up and running. Any1 know how?

Hey dude, if you got 7 mins to spare, just have a peek at this vid and tell me your thoughts.
Prt1:-

Prt 2:-

May I ask how we're going to communicate. I'd like to get up to speed and know what the aim is to start researching etc.

It would probably be easiest to set up a forum / trello / Dropbox (probably all 3) etc Maybe an IRC of some type for quicker communication and/or Teamspeak/mumble server
