Ok, so basically to master the Linux world I would suggest exposure to the three major streams, these being Redhat Based (technically more correct is RPM based), Debian based (like Knoppix and Ubuntu) and the granddaddy BSD based (Like FreeBSD). The major difference between RPM based and Debian based vs BSD based is that it's much closer to Unix than any other fork. You will also deal with compiling a kernel (it's almost one of the first things you need to do to get your BSD instance running like a military grade swiss watch) you will also spend copious amounts of time updating packages and compiling packages, as opposed to Linux (RedHat/Ubuntu) that does most of that though package managers. You want a nice GUI in BSD, pick one, compile it, use it. The learning curve is much steeper and it's about as unforgiving as you would expect a *nix based OS to be. However, it's extremely well documented and stable, much more stable than most other derivatives. BSD is also extremely versatile and many services/devices specifically customize the crap out of the kernel to get it to be as efficient as possible (PlayStation 3 & PlayStation 4's OS is actually FreeBSD based)

Separate note; how susceptible are SAS drives to failure? any more so than normal drives?

Is that a trick question? Any mechanical drive will fail eventually, however if you are buying SAS drives (especially NL-SAS) make sure the drive is Enterprise Grade or Enterprise Class or whatever the manufacturer wants to call it, especially if you're sticking it in a SAN, NAS or production server. I have seen Enterprise grade 15k SAS drives survive for 6+ years under moderate 24/7 usage.

Keep in mind that the failure rate of mechanical HDDs are quite high in the first 2 months of operation and then drop down to almost irrelevant for the next 46 to 56 months and then sharply spike after that. I think it's Seagate or WD that said that if a drive is inherently faulty it will most probably fail in the first 24 hours (if it's horribly faulty) or 2 months of usage (if say a platter is not balanced)
 
A question that I think I already know the answer to.

Long story short, is it possible to route all exchange internal mail via external SMTP?

You cannot do what you want to do.

If the email is internal then Exchange will deliver it straight to the mailbox. That behaviour cannot be changed. If you were to attempt to send out then you would probably just create a loop.

Internal email will never go near the send connector.

You can do it, however it is not recommended for a number of reasons. Besides the trickery and configuration magic you have to pull off to get it failsafe is just too much effort
 
Can anyone recommend a affordable cooler for an AM3 chip? The stock cooler sounds like a freaking vacuum cleaner which my neighbors can probably hear during those late night gaming sessions. Also the idle temps are not what i would like them to be. High 40's/low 50's.
 
Do you think my 775 setup will still be able to sell for a reasonable amount or at all?
Taking into account that the platform is pretty old but I have very decent components?

Brutal honesty, you may get a good deal if someone requires parts based on the tech, but the 775 chipset had its day a long time ago now. So I don't think you will get that much for it now :(

Wanting to upgrade JUST so that I can play Shadow of Mordor... maybe I should get a console instead...
